Ideas for a guest bedroom...

Getting ideas together for my guest room. Even though I only have 3 weeks left in this house, the look I create I want to replicate into my new place in Cairns. Of course I have no idea what this place in Cairns will look like but what I do know is I want 2 bedrooms and a very neautral shell so I can decorate as best I can for a rental!

I love the idea of a really clean white base with a pop of colour. Maybe green (kelly green of course)...

Or a pop of yellow...

Pop in some green but only a touch. Love this space by Kelly Hoppen...

Or a really simple, modern look. Serene for a guest...

So many options, which direction to go in...??

Movie Home : The Holiday

One of my favourite movies is The Holiday with Jude law, Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet and Jack Black.

The Holiday is your typical little romantic, bit comedy movie about 2 ladies who at unhappy points of their lives, decide swap houses for the holidays. Now as it would happen in real life (note the sarcasm here!!) Amanda (Diaz) lives in a beautiful big LA home but she swaps with Iris (Winslet) who lives in a very pretty little cottage in England. The characters are kind of cute, story line really simple but what I really love about this movie so much are the two very different homes.

First up is Amanda's. It's a modern house but not cold :

I love the fluffy carpet. In one scene Iris suffering from some jetlag jumps into bed and with a press of a button block put blinds just roll down - now that is luxury! Below is the seating nook in the master bedroom, nice!

In the movie Diaz is in the movie business, hence why she has this wall of movies in her comfy media room.

And then Iris' home in the Cotswolds. Not quite my personal taste but it is very cute :

It's a good movie if you're feeling tired or not feeling well and you are just happy to snuggle up by yourself and watch it.

A Gold Coast Home Tour

Last weekend my mum, sister and I went to have a look at this house here on the Gold Coast. Mum had clearly fallen in love with the furniture, high ceilings and details the homeowner had put in the place, so we had to go along and have a look.

The pictures actually don't do it justice but the feel in this home was really lovely. It felt very homely that you just wanted to stay, kick your shoes off and relax either inside or out.

The homes you normally find on the Gold Coast have quite a modern finish to them so I was very happy to see the interior of this house. Very Hamptonish style I guess is what I can liken it to.

It was a big house (6 bedrooms) but it didn't feel too big, you know where you are just aimlessly wandering around in empty space. It was still cosy and perfect for a little family.

The purple sofas really worked in this space. This whole space worked as a great open entertaining area which easily included the outside area.

The splashback in the kitchen is glass, such a great concept. At the end of the kitchen is a great butler's pantry and next to it a gorgeous wine fridge/room!

  The boys room nicely done

Now we know yellow is my favourite colour but no, this master bedroom isn't doing much for me! I feel the bed should be bigger and grander and I personally wouldn't have chosen the wallpaper. But you know what credit for the homeowner taking some chances.

The guest bedroom looks very simple and even bare but in person it was actually quite comfortable and inviting.

Beautiful outside decking area looking out onto the pool and the golf course. Ceiling fans outside a
must here on the Gold Coast.

It is located in Royal Pines which is a gated community for the fairly wealthy and this particular house is situated right on the golf course giving it a really lovely outlook.

You can see more details on the home here.

What to say...

As the cyclone (now at category 5) is hitting Far North Cairns, it's difficult to find things to blog about. The word friends of mine have been using in Cairns is that they are terrified and they have all prepared themselves to bed down in their bathrooms for the night.
It's going to be a long night as we wait for morning to see what Yasi has left behind.

But I do want to take the opportunity to say thanks to Louise.
You all know how much I love Table Tonic (blog and shop) and she has posted about my bedroom (with my yummy Table Tonic cushion) here on her blog. I'm thrilled to be acknowledged on such an inspirational and stylish blog.

Thank you also to all of you who have commented or sent me emails about my little bedroom.
I love how blog world works and the support we share for each other.

Why Mother Nature ??

I received a call from my dad tonight asking if I was going to have a store to go to in Cairns (for those who don't know I work in retail hence the store question)! Only a couple of days ago I posted about my new move and promotion to lovely Cairns in Far North Queensland. Well tonight, only weeks after South East Queensland was hit by massive floods, Cairns is now bracing itself for a monster cyclone - category 4 to be precise with winds of up to 250 km/h!

I'm lucky I haven't moved there yet but I am so scared for everyone I know living in Cairns.

Mother nature, what did Queensland do to deserve all this ??

Stay safe everyone  xx

My Bedroom

It's getting there, but I am super happy with my choice of quilt cover and of course my gorgeous cushion from the lovely Louise at Table Tonic. I wanted the room to be light and airy and I think I have achieved this.
The best thing about this quilt cover - I don't have to iron it yipee :)

Still a couple of things to work on (are we ever finished??) one being the lamps. You can see which ones I ended up getting and I will eventually cover the shades to a grey and white fabric of some sort. Also collecting some more bits and pieces to dress my side tables. I'm off to buy some flowers  for them today I think.

For now I am really happy and will be replicating this look in my new place even though I won't have my grey walls.
What do you think?

A little bit of news...

For the last 6 months I've been keeping a little bit of a secret which only a few of my friends knew but as I was able to tell my team at work today, I can finally share my news.

In one month time I will be packing up my first little place and moving! I have been offered a promotion with work and it involves a move to Cairns to take up the position. I am excited but I am filled with mixed emotions. The team I will be working up there are really great and it's a very good career move.

My soon to be new hometown, not bad hey?

But naturally my fellow blogger's, what does this mean for my blog - My First Little Place?? After all, this blog all started because of the work I am doing on my first house. Does this blog now become redundant??
That would devastate me :(

Maybe I could rename my blog "My First Little Place - In Cairns"!!!
Even though I will go back to renting (!!) being the interior design enthusiast I am, of course I am already planning on how to decorate my new place and what new pieces of furniture and homewares I can get to make it feel as homely and comfortable as possible.

So I hope that you will all stay with me to help get me through adjusting in my new destination, away from family and friends by still following my blog ... that will still be called My First Little Place!

Start counting down the days ...

Maybe when I venture back there I will stay here, The Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

Have you been to Barcelona? Would love to hear about it...
